Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 19th, 2017 – Her Excellency Elisabeth Eklund presented her credentials as non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to St. Kitts and Nevis during a meeting with His Excellency the Governor-General Sir S. W. Tapley Seaton, G.C.M.G., C.V.O., Q.C., J.P.
Her Excellency Eklund subsequently met with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, Ms. Kaye Bass where she spoke of the long standing diplomatic relations Sweden has enjoyed with St. Kitts and Nevis and pledged her commitment to strengthen cooperation between Sweden and St. Kitts and Nevis especially in areas of renewal energy and climate change.
Ambassador Elisabeth Eklund journeyed to Nevis where she paid a courtesy call on the Premier of Nevis, Hon. Vance Amory, who expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to exchange ideas with the Ambassador.
Ms. Eklund also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Mark Brantley. Mr. Brantley acknowledged that the Federation has had friendly relations with Sweden and expressed the desire to continue to engage Sweden bilaterally. He highlighted the availability of scholarship opportunities for young people to pursue studies in Sweden and the issue of De-risking and blacklisting which has placed St. Kitts and Nevis under constant threat from the European Union and others. Britain’s pending departure from the European Union and the implications for St. Kitts and Nevis was also discussed.
Ambassador-designate Eklund is a career diplomat who has served in the diplomatic field over the last 20 years, in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, such as Director, Deputy Head of Department, Chair of EU Working Group of Latin America, COLAT, during the Swedish EU Presidency. She has served in a range of diplomatic posts around the world including Vice-Consul at the Swedish Consul General in Jerusalem, First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Sweden in New York as well as Swedish Ambassador to Cuba. Her academic background includes a Master of Laws Degree, LLM.
